Consumer Alerts, Fraud and Scams

North Carolina’s Attorney General’s Office is very active in helping consumers avoid fraud and exploitation. Its Consumer Protection Section uses mediation to help consumers resolve complaints in such areas as telemarketing. Its Citizens’ Rights Section provides information on victims’ rights issues, elder abuse, and other matters important to older consumers.

To help protect people from telemarketing fraud, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has launched a “Spread the Word about Telemarketing Fraud” consumer education campaign. The FTC site also has links with other useful web pages, including that of the National Fraud Information Center, which maintains a toll-free Consumer Assistance Service (1-800-876-7060) to help consumers with questions about telephone or mail solicitations and information about how to report fraud and file complaints.
