North Carolina's Medicaid program serves approximately one out of every five people residing in our state based on an estimated total population in 2006 of 8,860,341. 

In 2006-2007, Medicaid served approximately 1.7 million children, aged, blind and/or disabled individuals. 

The budget for the 2007-08 Medicaid program is $11,345,677,668 – which is supported by $8,425,318,396 in revenue (predominately federal Medicaid funds) and $2,920,359,272 in state appropriations.  Medicaid's budget is one of the largest in NC government – second only to the overall budget for primary and secondary education.

NC Health Choice for Children (NCHC) provides funding to extend health care coverage to roughly 115,000 children each month whose family income exceeds Medicaid financial eligibility criteria. 

The 2007-2008 budget for NCHC is $226,805,564 – of which $167,414,409 is supported by federal funds and $59,391,155 state appropriations. 

DMA partners with the State Employee's Health Plan and NC Blue Cross/Blue Shield in administering the NCHC program.

  • Effective May 23, 2008, all claims must contain your NPI and taxonomy.  
  • NC Medicaid will no longer accept claims submitted without an NPI on or after May 23, 2008. Unless you are an atypical provider, failure to use the NPI by this date will result in a claim denial.
