About Us: Office on Disability and Health

Purpose

Data clearly indicates that persons with disabilities are more likely to participate in unhealthy behavior, have a chronic disease, and are not able to easily access health services.  Promoting the health of people with disabilities, preventing secondary conditions, and eliminating disparities between people with and without disabilities in N.C. is critical.

Description

The N.C. Office on Disability and Health (NCODH) is an integral part of the Children and Youth Branch in the N.C. Division of Public Health and works hand-in-hand with the Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute at the University of North Carolina. Its primary mission is to promote the health of people with disabilities, prevent secondary conditions, and eliminate disparities between people with and without disabilities in NC.

The goals of the NCODH are:

To increase awareness and understanding of the health related needs of individuals with disabilities

  • Improve access and inclusion
  • Develop health promotion programs and educational materials for consumers and professionals
  • Conduct and report on research and data collection
  • Affect disability policy related to these areas
