Medical Eye Care

What is Medical Eye Care?

In North Carolina, the three major causes of blindness are retinal disorders, cataracts, and glaucoma. The Medical Eye Care Program uses every available resource to prevent blindness from these and other causes and where possible, to restore vision in people who have suffered loss of sight.

The Medical Eye Care Program delivers preventative and corrective services may offer the following services subject to the availability of funds: (1) Sponsorship for eye examinations, eye glasses, treatment and surgery; (2) Children’s vision screenings, low-vision evaluations, correction with limited vision with low vision aids, and eye care education are delivered by Registered Nurses.

Medical Eye Care is available in all counties in the state.

Medical Services are also provided through the Vocational Rehabilitation Program. Both programs use every available resource to prevent blindness from these and where possible, to restore vision in individuals who have suffered loss of sight.

Who is Eligible

Services are offered to all eligible residents in their home counties in North Carolina who meet the income scale for this service. 

How  to Apply

 Individuals can apply for the program at their local Department of Social Services, with the local social worker for the blind where they are located in either the Department of Social Services or the local Division of Services for the Blind district office, or other sites in the county.
