The Walter B. Jones Alcohol and Drug Abuse Treatment Center (WBJADATC) opened its doors in June 1969 as a 76-bed, short term, alcohol recovery center. The center served 33 counties in the Eastern Region and five counties in the South Central Region.
Today, the Walter B. Jones Alcohol and Drug Abuse Treatment Center is one of three sister agencies that serve North Carolinians. We have 80 beds and serve 38 counties in eastern North Carolina. The Center serves NC residents who have substance abuse and co-occurring mental health disorders in a 24 hour inpatient setting.
The Center provides treatment for pregnant and postpartum women and their infants as part of the Eastern Regional Women and Infants Project (EWRIP) and has the only on-site “maternal unit” in any state facility in North Carolina. EWRIP at Walter B. Jones ADATC allows us to accept mothers with their infants under the age of one year into treatment as a “maternal unit”. All substance abuse counselors are either certified or licensed, as appropriate, by the NC Substance Abuse Professional Practice Board (NCSAPPB).
The Center offers practicum’s and internships from undergraduate to post-doctoral levels and has recently received students from UNC Chapel Hill, East Carolina University, The University of Miami, The University of Ontario, and Campbell University. Several of the Center's professional staff members hold adjunct professorship appointments with ECU and the ECU School of Medicine
