Wellness Activities Available at DHHS Worksites

Worksite wellness activities are organized through wellness committees at each DHHS division/office and facility. Types of wellness activities available may include walking clubs, fitness equipment/classes, weight management programs, stress reliever activities, and educational presentations. Contact your DHHS Agency Wellness Representative for information about wellness activities at your worksite.

Participation in worksite wellness activities is completely voluntary and occurs on your own time

Wellness Activities for Raleigh-Area Employees


Haywood Gym Wellness Center on Dix Campus in Raleigh

The Haywood Gym Wellness Center offers a basketball/volleyball court, showers, lockers, restrooms, and a fitness room with 2 treadmills, 2 exercise bikes, an elliptical machine, and hand weights. The gym and fitness room are available to DHHS employees every day from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. The gym area can be used for recreation if there is not a scheduled activity.

A variety of wellness classes (pilates, yoga, zumba, line dance for fitness, and aerobics) and team sports (volleyball, basketball and softball) for employees are scheduled at the gym. See the gym schedule (PDF, 96KB). Employee teams from other departments in state government can also participate. Any team fees are paid directly to the team organizers. Release Form and Access Card Required for Gym Use

Employees must sign an NC DHHS Liability Waiver for Employees Using the Haywood Gynmasium Facility form and an NC DHHS Liability Waiver for Employees Participating in Fitness Activities at Work form and submit them to their Division/Facility Wellness Leader/Representative to request a badge for ‘Free Time’ access to the Gym.

The DHHS Haywood Wellness Center policy provides detailed information on approved types of use of the facility and procedures for employees wanting to use the Exercise Room.

Reserve the Gym

The Haywood Gym may also be used for department events, such as blood drives and large meetings as well as for DHHS client and community service agency activities, when needed. Use of the Haywood Gym must be reserved through the Department using the Haywood Gymnasium Facility Request Form.

Groups wanting to reserve the gym area for wellness activities, team sports, meetings, or events should do the following:

  1. Review the DHHS Haywood Gym policy regarding approved uses of the gym and priorities for different groups wanting to use the facility.
  2. Check the posted Gym Schedule (PDF, 96KB) to see if the desired date(s) and time is available.
  3. Complete a Haywood Gymnasium Facility Request Form.
  4. Requests will be reviewed and approved based on DHHS policy regarding approved types of activities and events, availability of the gym, and priorities for use of the facility. Applicants will be notified by e-mail or phone.
  5. Approved applicants must complete and submit a signed NC DHHS Liability Waiver for Groups or Organizations Using the Haywood Gymnasium Facility form.
  6. A group representative must pick up a key card the day before or day of the event between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. at the Adams Building Reception Desk on Blair Drive on Dix Campus. The key card allows swiped access to the main door to the gym on Pedneau Drive.
  7. Return key cards to the Adams Building after the event. After 5 p.m. they can be placed in the drop box at the Campus Maintenance Office Building behind the gym at 805 Whiteside Drive.
