Onboarding: The Other Side of Orientation

Scrabble Board Contents The First Nine Months The First Three Months The First Thirty Days The First Day

Orientation is critical in helping new employees understand their new organizational culture and structure. Traditionally, orientation is a "first day" routine, including personal introductions, a packet of benefits information, lunch with new colleagues, and maybe an afternoon of policy, building map, and org chart study. But what happens in the days following--the weeks and months of the first year.

Research indicates that employees' productivity and involvement is directly proportional to what and how much they learn about their new environment--trust and integrity, nature of the job, growth and development potential, and working relationships. First day orientation is merely a start.

How can managers sustain the orientation energy with employees? What tools can supervisors use to foster new employee connection and keep these employees engaged in the goals?
