Douglas A. Veazey, DDS, Director, Dental Services at Broughton Hospital, was recently presented with the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, which is North Carolina’s highest civilian award.
The order was conferred by Governor Mike Easley and presented by Thomas J. Mahle, M.S., Hospital Director/CEO at Broughton Hospital.
Dr. Veazey, who retired from Broughton Hospital on March 1, 2009, was recognized by the Departmental Leadership Team on February 25.
“With thirty one years of service to the state of North Carolina, Dr. Veazey is retiring”, Mr. Mahle said in presenting the award. “During his tenure, he has positively impacted the care of some of the state’s most challenged and needy citizens.” Throughout his career, Dr. Veazey has maintained concern for providing excellent dental services to North Carolina citizens. In addition to his duties as the Director of Dental Services, Dr. Veazey functioned as chairperson of the credentials and bylaws committees for twenty three years. Mr. Mahle stated that “the hospital is fortunate to have had the benefit of Dr. Veazey’s expertise in all of these areas”.
Dr. Veazey was a 1972 graduate of the University of North Carolina and a 1976 graduate of the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry. After completion of a two-year general practice residency at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana, he was named the Dental Department Director at Broughton Hospital in July 1978.
Dr. Veazey’s professional activities include membership of the Southern Association of Institutional Dentists, serving as president in 1996. He was a part-time instructor in the Department of General Dentistry, LSU School of Dentistry from 1977-78; clinical preceptor for dental hygiene, Guilford Technical Community College 1980-88; clinical preceptor for dental hygiene, Catawba Community College 2000 – Present; clinical preceptor for dental assisting, Western Piedmont Community College 1990 – Present and part-time adjunct assistant professor, Department of Dental Ecology, UNC School of Dentistry 1978 – Present.
On February 17, 2009, Douglas A. Veazey, DDS, was honored by the Medical/Psychology Staff at Broughton Hospital for his years of service as a member of the committee, and his dedication as Chair of the Bylaws and Credentials Committees. Dr. Lisa Lorelli, current President of the Medical/Psychology Staff, presented Dr. Veazey with a commemorative lithograph in appreciation and recognition of his dedicated service to the staff and patients at Broughton Hospital, as well as a certificate for a Watkins Garden brick which will be placed in his honor.
Dr. Veazey and his wife, Gwen, reside in Morganton and have two grown children, Liz and Scott.
