HIV Testing Campaign holds events in Rocky Mount

RALEIGH – “Get Real. Get Tested.”, a public health campaign to encourage people to get tested for HIV, will hold free testing events on June 23 in Rocky Mount.

The free testing will be available on Saturday, June 23, from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. at two locations:

  • Wal-Mart at 1511 Benvenue Boulevard; and
  • Branch Street Park at 1700 Branch Street.

Look for the medical van at both locations.

“We are fortunate to have this testing event come to our community, and citizens should participate,” said Karen LaChapelle, health director for Edgecombe County. “Edgecombe County has one of the highest rising rates of infection and we need to come together as a community to fight this disease.”

Bill Hill, health director for Nash County, said that “HIV goes undetected in many residents. If you do test positive, medical intervention is important. Knowing your HIV status can help prevent the spread of this disease to others.”

Several agencies in the Rocky Mount area are co-sponsoring these events. They include Edgecombe County Health Department; Nash County Health Department; Abundant Life Community Action Center (ALCAC); Brody School of Medicine; Caring Hearts Healthcare; N.C. Wesleyan College; New Sources, Inc.; Northeastern North Carolina Partnership for Public Health; Project GRACE; Project Momentum, Inc.; Rocky Mount Housing Authority; Rocky Mount Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC), Inc.; and SOZO Ministries, Inc.

This statewide HIV education and testing campaign is being conducted by the North Carolina HIV/STD Prevention and Care Branch of the Division of Public Health in cooperation with community-based organizations and local health departments. The goals are to test people for HIV who have never been tested before, identify people living with HIV/AIDS who need care, and provide HIV and AIDS prevention and education messages to the general public.
