RALEIGH – DHHS Secretary Dempsey Benton today announced that Dr. Jack St. Clair, director of Cherry Hospital in Goldsboro, has indicated his desire to step down as chief administrator effective Dec. 31.  St. Clair has been director of Cherry Hospital since December 2005.

According to Benton, St. Clair has been offered a transfer to the Black Mountain Neuro-Medical Treatment Center in Black Mountain to fill a vacant position as business manager.

Day-to-day management of the facility will be overseen by the hospital’s independent management team retained by DHHS. The Compass Group has been working with Cherry Hospital since late October to help the facility prepare for readmission to the federal Medicare and Medicaid programs. The Group members are working with state and facility personnel to evaluate the overall operations and make improvements within the facility to enhance patient care.

The Division of Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities, and Substance Abuse Services has begun the process to advertise for a permanent replacement for the hospital director.
