GOLDSBORO — Surveyors for the federal Centers of Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) have completed their investigation at the O’Berry Neuro-Medical Center and given the facility 30 days to make corrections.

CMS arrived at the O’Berry Center on Friday in response to the death of a resident. As a result of their findings, facility administrators are developing a plan of correction that calls for closer supervision and increased monitoring of the residents in one of 25 homes at the O’Berry Center.

The surveyors will recommend that CMS issue a finding of a condition level deficiency, which means surveyors did not find conditions that place residents in immediate jeopardy of harm, but deficiencies must be corrected within 30 days or the facility could face the loss of its Medicare and Medicaid funding.

The incident remains under investigation by the Medicaid Investigation Unit of the Attorney General’s Office. Four employees have been placed on investigatory leave pending O’Berry’s internal investigation.
