Five new cases of H1N1 flu have been confirmed in North Carolina today, Thursday, June 4, 2009. As of 3:30 p.m. today, North Carolina has 35 confirmed cases of the novel H1N1 virus. Today’s new cases are in Guilford (1), Orange (1), New Hanover (1), and Wake (2) counties.

County-by-county confirmed H1N1 case counts:

Brunswick - 1
Buncombe - 1
Carteret - 2
Craven – 8
Cumberland - 1
Durham – 1
Guilford - 1
Johnston - 1
Mecklenburg - 2
New Hanover - 4
Onslow - 3
Orange – 3
Rockingham - 1
Rutherford - 1
Wake – 4
Wayne - 1

The following information can help residents prevent transmission of the novel H1N1 influenza:

  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand rub
  • Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing
  • Avoid close contact with those who are sick
  • Stay at home if you are sick

Influenza-like symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Some people have reported diarrhea or vomiting associated with this virus.
