DHHS Division of Public Health employees joined together to sample locally-grown apples at their N.C. Crunch event on Oct. 10.
Oct. 15, 2018 – What does it sound like when 29 people bite crispy fresh apples in unison? How ‘bout ‘CRUNCH!’
Division of Public Health employees participated in the N.C. Crunch event at the division’s Six Forks campus on Oct. 10. At the stroke of noon, a group of participants gathered outside and crunched into a North Carolina grown apple to celebrate National Farm to School Month and to promote local agriculture.
The event was hosted by the Child and Adult Food Care Program (CACFP) Nutrition, Training, and Policy Team. As a federal nutrition program administered at the state level, CACFP provides reimbursement for nutritious meals and snacks to children, adults and people with disabilities attending day care facilities, early care and education (ECE) programs, emergency shelters and afterschool programs across the state.
Early Care and Education programs can be particularly influential on young children’s development, including their taste preferences and eating habits. The Child and Adult Food Care Program is uniquely situated to expose children to a variety of vegetables, fruits and whole grains during their time in care and set them on a life-long path of healthy eating.
