Summer Nutrition Program Helps Feed Kids During Summer Months

July 17, 2018 – A federally-funded initiative is providing healthy meals to children and teens in economically disadvantaged areas through Aug. 31.

The Summer Food Service Program, led by the N.C. Department of Public Instruction and No Kid Hungry North Carolina, and in partnership with the NC Department of Health and Human Services, helps low-income children and teens at risk of inadequate nutrition with free, nutritious meals during the summer months when school is not in session.

“For many kids and teens, summertime means food, friends and fun,” said Division of Social Services Deputy Director David Locklear. “For families counting on school breakfast and lunch, the summer months can be stressful, stretching family food budgets to the breaking point.”

The meals are similar to school lunch and breakfast programs, except the meals are free to all kids aged 18 and younger who come to a summer meals site through Aug. 31. To locate a summer meal site:
