The U.S. Department of Agriculture today approved a one-day extension for eligible Guilford County residents to apply for Disaster Food and Nutrition Services benefits. The one-day extension, which came at the request of county officials, means that Guilford County residents can apply for benefits on Tuesday at the Guilford County Department of Social Services.
The Disaster Food and Nutrition Services benefits are intended for people who were affected by a tornado on April 15 and are not currently receiving Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) benefits, also known as food stamps. The one-day extension does not apply to Rockingham County residents.
People may qualify for disaster assistance if they suffered losses from the severe weather, including:
- Destruction or damage to homes
- Disaster-related expenses, such as repairs to homes or businesses, or the cost of temporary shelter
- Loss of income or food
Eligibility will be determined according to federal criteria, and eligible residents will receive a one-month temporary benefit for their household.
How to apply for Disaster Food and Nutrition Services
Those applying for Disaster Food and Nutrition Services benefits must go to the Guilford County Department of Social Services and provide proof of identity along with proof of residency (if available).
