Black Mountain Neuro-Medical Treatment Center to Begin Large-Scale Renovations Mid-June to Improve Patient Care

NCDHHS' Black Mountain Neuro-Medical Treatment Center (BMNTC) will undergo large-scale renovations in mid-June of this year to increase resident capacity and privacy and upgrade outdated wings.
 
The project consists of a full renovation of the entire Gravely Wing of BMNTC originally built in 1932, which currently includes two residential units and office spaces. The project includes converting office spaces to an additional residential unit, and upfitting resident bedrooms so they will be private or semi-private.
 
Special care has been taken to provide a comfortable environment that promotes healing through thoughtful layouts, colors and finishes, in addition to new mechanical, plumbing and electrical systems.
 
The $14.8 million project will optimize Western North Carolina’s ability to provide a level of support beyond that which can be provided in family or community living settings for individuals experiencing multiple failed community placements.
 
"At the completion of the anticipated year-long project, Black Mountain Neuro-Medical Treatment Center will be more capable to achieve its mission and vision of being a specialized skilled nursing facility — continuing to focus on maintaining quality of life and dignity for adults with neurocognitive and neurodevelopmental disorders with coexisting complex medical and behavioral needs whose level of support extends beyond that which can be provided in family or community living settings," said BMNTC Director Marggi Walden, MA CCC-SLP, NHA. 
 
Black Mountain Neuro-Medical Treatment Center is equipped to provide specialized services to individuals with brain injuries, progressive dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. These diagnoses make other living arrangements in the community challenging due to the health and physical status of the residents requiring 24-hour supervision, daily nursing assessments and assistance with daily living activities.
 
BMNTC is one of three state-operated Neuro-Medical Treatment Centers serving North Carolina. Each of the three centers’ focus is to admit and care for individuals with profiles that include high behavioral acuity, mental illness, intellectual and developmental disabilities, complex medical needs, complex anatomical deformities and advanced chronic illnesses.
