PRESS RELEASE — Dr. Devdutta “Dev” Sangvai was sworn in as the new Secretary for the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services on Sunday, Jan. 12, 2025. Dr. Sangvai was selected by Governor Josh Stein to lead the department as the state’s 19th Secretary for Health and Human Services. The swearing-in ceremony was held at Dorothea Dix Park where the department is currently headquartered.

Dr. Devdutta “Dev” Sangvai was sworn in as the new Secretary for the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services on Sunday, Jan. 12, 2025. Dr. Sangvai was selected by Governor Josh Stein to lead the department as the state’s 19th Secretary for Health and Human Services. The swearing-in ceremony was held at Dorothea Dix Park where the department is currently headquartered.

“I am honored to lead the Department of Health and Human Services and build on the already strong foundation toward creating a healthier North Carolina for all,” said Secretary Sangvai. “I look forward to working with the incredible team at NCDHHS and Governor Stein to ensure every North Carolinian has access to the right services to support their health, safety and well-being – no matter where they live or how much money they make.”

“Secretary Sangvai is ready for the challenge of improving the health and quality of life for children and families in North Carolina,” said Governor Josh Stein. “I look forward to working with him and the NCDHHS team to make North Carolina safer, healthier, and stronger.” 

Secretary Sangvai is a family medicine physician and a professor at Duke University. He is also a member of the North Carolina Medical Board. Prior to his role with NCDHHS, he served as President of Duke Regional Hospital and President of the North Carolina Medical Society. His work has focused improving access, developing the healthcare workforce, and making care more efficient. Dr. Sangvai is the first Indian American cabinet member to serve under a North Carolina governor. See more photos of the swearing in ceremony.

 

Dr. Devdutta "Dev" Sangvai prestó juramento como nuevo secretario del Departamento de Salud y Servicios Humanos de Carolina del Norte el domingo 12 de enero de 2025. Dr. Sangvai fue seleccionado por el gobernador Josh Stein para dirigir el departamento como el 19º secretario de Salud y Servicios Humanos (NCDHHS, por sus siglas en inglés) del estado. La ceremonia de juramento se llevó a cabo en Dorothea Dix Park, donde el departamento tiene actualmente su sede.

"Me siento honrado de dirigir el Departamento de Salud y Servicios Humanos y construir sobre la base ya sólida hacia la creación de una Carolina del Norte más saludable para todos", dijo el secretario Sangvai. "Espero trabajar con el increíble equipo del NCDHHS y el gobernador Stein para garantizar que todos los habitantes de Carolina del Norte tengan acceso a los servicios adecuados para apoyar su salud, seguridad y bienestar, sin importar dónde vivan o cuánto dinero ganen".

"El secretario Sangvai está listo para el desafío de mejorar la salud y la calidad de vida de los niños y las familias en Carolina del Norte", dijo el Gobernador Josh Stein. "Espero trabajar con él y el equipo del NCDHHS para hacer que Carolina del Norte sea más seguro, más saludable y fuerte".

El secretario Sangvai es médico de medicina familiar y profesor en la Universidad de Duke. También es miembro de la Junta Médica de Carolina del Norte. Antes de su cargo en NCDHHS, se desempeñó como presidente del Hospital Regional de Duke y presidente de la Sociedad Médica de Carolina del Norte. Su trabajo se ha centrado en mejorar el acceso, desarrollar la fuerza laboral de atención médica y hacer que la atención sea más eficiente. Dr. Sangvai es el primer miembro del gabinete indio-americano en servir bajo un gobernador de Carolina del Norte.
