NC Disability Benefits 101

There are many myths about how working will impact your public benefits and how hard it is to get your benefits back if you stop working. Sometimes, people think they can’t work because they will lose their benefits. We know that people with disabilities can — and do — work. With the right kind of preparation, reasonable accommodations and supports, all North Carolinians can be successful in a job that they are good at and enjoy doing.

On May 5, 2025, the Division of Employment and Independence for People with Disabilities will launch a new online resource designed to help people with disabilities, their families and guardians, disability service providers, and other disability advocates better understand how work and benefits can go together. North Carolina’s Disability Benefits 101 offers tools and information to help you understand what will happen to your current benefits if you start working. It also provides answers to frequently asked questions, tips on how to avoid common pitfalls, information on how to save money while working, and resources to help people with disabilities prepare for work.

Exploring DB101 can help you:

  • Understand which public benefits you receive
  • Discover which work incentives can help you
  • Explore resources that support work
  • Set employment goals and plan your next steps
  • See how to save money and get ahead
  • Find the right health coverage
  • See what other benefits might be available to you
  • Plan for changes at work
