To increase awareness about problem gambling and its effects on individuals, families and communities, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services is partnering with East Carolina University to conduct vital research into the emerging trends and impact of problem gambling, as well as looking at historically marginalized and understudied populations in North Carolina.
NCDHHS and ECU’s Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology will celebrate the launch of the Gambling Research and Policy Initiative (GRPI) on Thursday, Nov. 21. A ribbon cutting ceremony will take place 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. in the ECU Brewster Building. Credentialed media are invited to attend. Representatives from the NC Education Lottery, Birches Health and Telus Health will also be in attendance.
Problem gambling, or gambling addiction, is any gambling behavior that disrupts someone’s life, or the lives of people close to them, such as parents, siblings or friends. The NCDHHS North Carolina Problem Gambling Program offers services to help people maintain a healthy relationship with gambling or abstain completely.
