PRESS RELEASE — As summer approaches, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services is emphasizing the importance of safe swimming, heat safety and safe grilling practices to help prevent illness, injury and death. May is National Water Safety Month, and May 20-26, 2024, is the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s 20th annual Healthy and Safe Swimming Week. NCDHHS is encouraging families and individuals to focus on safety as everyone gathers for outdoor activities in anticipation of Memorial Day.

PRESS RELEASE — The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services will host a live, Spanish-language Cafecito and tele-town hall on Tuesday, May 21, from 6 to 7 p.m., to discuss maternal health in North Carolina and provide resources to support physical and mental well-being before, during and after pregnancy.

MEDIA ADVISORY — In honor of Women’s Health Week, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services is celebrating the expansion of contraceptive services in independent and chain pharmacies across the state. Soon people statewide will be able to receive contraceptive services at pharmacies without a prescription from another medical provider, including counseling and education from a pharmacist about options for contraception and other preventive services, dispensing of contraception and connection to ongoing care if needed.

PRESS RELEASE — The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services today announced the distribution of $6,250,000 to seven counties to provide youth substance use prevention within their communities. NCDHHS applied for and was awarded the funding through the U. S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, as part of its National Drug Control Strategy. North Carolina was one of only 12 states to receive funding for its efforts to invest in behavioral health care prevention.

PRESS RELEASE — The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services this week announced a $1.35 million investment to begin piloting trauma-informed mobile crisis and crisis co-responder services. These services will deploy teams who are trained and experienced to respond to people experiencing a behavioral health emergency, including mental health professionals and peer support specialists who can de-escalate crisis situations and provide appropriate support. This investment is part of the department’s ongoing effort to transform the behavioral health crisis response system to ensure North Carolinians have someone to call, someone to respond and somewhere to go for care. These pilots focus on the second piece of that crisis response system: someone to respond.

The public, media and interested organizations are invited to participate in the discussion.

MEDIA ADVISORY — The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services is celebrating Older Americans Month 2024 Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at the North Carolina State Farmers Market where people can celebrate aging and learn about local resources during Older Americans Month. The fair is free and open to the public. Sign language interpreters will available, and the event will be closed captioned as well.

MEDIA ADVISORY — The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services invites media to a press conference in Goldsboro announcing the new name of the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Services: Employment and Independence for People with Disabilities. This name change marks an important milestone for the vocational rehabilitation program in North Carolina, reflecting the real progress achieved by people with disabilities over the last century and celebrating the potential and accomplishments of North Carolinians on their journey to independence.
